Civility versus Savagery: The breakdown of the Human Condition or Are there angels and demons living among us?

  • $5.50

An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Unit on Lord of the Flies examining the struggle between the civilizing instinct - the impulse to obey rules, behave morally, and act lawfully - and the savage instinct - the impulse to seek power over others by any means necessary, act selfishly, scorn moral rules, and indulge in violence. The collection of beliefs, emotions and instincts that are common to all human beings is known as the Human Condition. With everything there is always an extreme either way; good and bad, black and white, ying and yang. The same applies with the Human Condition. Humans choose either to be good or to be bad. Of course there are middle-dwellers that do the right thing some or maybe even most of the time but in most instances a person chooses civility - a polite act or expression or chooses savagery - the act of cruelty or violence. This is the case in almost every story throughout history, fact or fiction. It all comes down to a choice; to be good or to be evil.
