The Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with One Step or Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Maturity
An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic, Standards-based Unit Exploring Coming of Age Literature People of all ages survive experiences which help them to come to understand themselves and/or life in general. It is through these epiphanies that people come of age. This unit will help students learn to recognize these Coming of Age experiences in the literature they read as well as in their own lives.
In this unit, students will be challenged to determine and evaluate the decisions made by characters in literature and write about their own experiences. They will also explore the real-life Coming of Age rituals through their math, science, and social studies classes.
Through the discussions and interpretations of the literary works, students will analyze the impact of internal and external conflicts in both the works and the impact on the plots and the characters and in their personal lives.
