A Light at the End of the Tunnel or Bright Ideas on Reinventing the Light bulb: Visualizing the Future through Science Fiction: An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Unit Exploring The City of Ember. Students will understand that actions have consequences that might not be evident until later: Students read Jeanne DuPrau's sci fi novel, The City of Ember. This story involves young people trying to help their city and townspeople survive diminishing resources. Multiple copies of the book are needed to complete this unit. Survival is linked to knowledge, culture, technology, and human's capacity for problem-solving. This unit uses literature as a foundation for learning about the interconnectedness of individuals and societies. Sixth-graders examine the past, present, and several possible futures. They analyze the society in Ember and consider how past knowledge can impact the present and future survival of the members of that society. Students may see that sometimes you need to work outside the rules.
