An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Unit On the Human Family Families are fundamental to understanding the tensions, conflicts, and challenges of American life. Socialization within the family is the process by which children acquire the values, beliefs, and standards of behavior that are expected in their culture. It is important for adolescents to understand their place in the world by understanding the unit of family and the role it plays in our culture. Through literature and the arts and the social sciences the institution of "family" is explored and analyzed. Students through various activities will be able to appreciate the dynamics of relationships within the family structure and the interdependence between family and the society in which we live.
