When the farmers of Oklahoma and Arkansas were on the verge of loosing all hope they turned to California as the "Promised Land". California wasn't everything the Okies had hoped for. The themes of geography, economics, class struggle, racism, and human environmental interaction influenced many the cultural changes that affect California in the 20th century.
