Can You Brer It? "From Brer & Beyond" The Literature of Slavery

An interdisciplinary thematic unit on the literature of slavery for Grade 2. The literature of slavery is important because it reveals how African-American people spiritually survived slavery. There ar stories of gaining freedom, trickster stories where the weak outsmart the powerful, and stories containing information about the Underground railroad. This unit allows students to make inferences about other cultures by studying these stories that provide a guide to the society, values, and politics of slavery.
