An integrated, interdisciplinary unit on American Gothic with a focus on Edgar Allen Poe. Students in English III will be introduced to the late 18th and 19th century Gothic tradition and its revival in the 20th century. Focusing on Edgar Allen Poe in an author study, students will gather information about his life, gaining insight into the real person behind his famous poems and stories. Influences of math/science into his works. Appreciate the craft on one of America's most renowed writers and gain information on Poe's impact on the genres poetry, short fiction, and the detective story. Gothic tradition will be traced through Southern Gothic to modern writing. Emphasis on the development of the horror story in film will be pursued.
