An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Study of Consumerism for Eighth Graders Economic activity is a basic feature of civilization. From the introduction of Barbie Dolls to the present day Beanie Babies, the latter half of the twentieth century has been an age of consumerism. In an era fixated on acquisition and consumption, it is a must for individuals to be aware of the elements involved in how best to manage their resources. Students need to learn how to make wise economic choices and informed decisions regarding purchases in order to become responsible citizens. This integrated unit introduces eighth grade students to basic consumer awareness, purchasing skills, and the issues associated with them.
