From the First Man in England to the Last Man in Europe
An integrated, interdisciplinary study of the shaping of British culture in response to twenty centuries fo change. This unit addresses the impact that change has produced in the social/economic/cultural and moral development of England from the time of the unknown Anglo-Saxon poets to the age of George Orwell and his novel 1984. It is important for students to understand that change today is increasing at an increasing rate, and that old supportive philosophies and ethical thought that traditionally guided us are unable to develop as fast as change itself. The recognition of our situation is significant for the evaluation of our own actions and for our survival as civilized people.
