An Integrated, Interdisciplinary Curriculum Unit Examining Imperialism in Africa from the 1800's to Present This unit exposes students to the geography and cultures of Africa while
encouraging them to explore the many reasons why nations of the world
are different. As the world becomes smaller in this technological age, it's
important to understand and respect our neighbors, their culture, their
beliefs, their reasons for doing things a certain way. The historical events
of colonization, imperialism, and apartheid will all be introduced. Through
elaboration, students may develop a deeper understanding of life in a third
world country, and empathy for the native peoples, and a perception of why
the Europeans felt obligated to colonize this region of the world.
