An Integrated, Interdisciplinary Thematic Unit on the Role of Agriculture in the Advancement of Society The invention of agriculture is important because it provides a foundation for the development of societies. Agriculture provides people to opportunity to reason and create rather than be solely concerned with susrvival. Students need to understand the key role that agriculture played in moving humankind from nomadic family life to the organized societies of the Fertile Cresent, Egypt, India and China. In addition, students need to understand how agriculutre continues to anchor our societal development.
