An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Unit Exploring the American Welfare System via Literature, Economics, and Career Communication The welfare system in the United States has changed and re-created itself since its birth under the Roosevelt administration. This interdisciplinary unit is designed to assist students in recognizing characteristics of the original welfare programs, the manner in which these programs have been altered, and future development and changes within the welfare system of today and tomorrow. It will also allow students to understand the circumstances behind people's motivation to use welfare assistance and help them to recognize the correlation between financial security and education.
