An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Look at Intolerance in America from the Puritans to Present Time The US is the most heterogeneous country in the world. This Diversity, unfortunately, has produced conflict. America today is faced with the challenge of acting as one united nation. As America approaches the year 2000, we are faced with an increasingly diverse population. It is important that students understand the history of intolerance. People first came to America to escape intolerance by others. However, as our country grew, various groups have been exposed to hostility from the dominant Anglo culture. By looking at the idea of intolerance in American society, beginning with the Puritans, students are forced to look at their own intolerance, understand it, and possibly correct it, thus giving us a more tolerant society.
