An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic, Standards-based Unit for eighth grade students that examines the effects of innovations on our culture. This unit is designed to provide middle school students with the opportunity to study inventions that have developed in the last 200 years. With continuous advances in technology, the tools that mankind has at its disposal became increasingly useful, as well as dangerous. Students will learn a historical context for the inventions that dominate our lives. Students will know why we need these inventions and the risks there are of having them at our disposal. Students will learn the driving forces for why people invent, qualities that make an invention successful, and how the course of history is driven by inventions. Students will learn how human and social behavior is affect by invention technology. All this will be undertaken through the science, social studies, literature, and math disciplines, along with other curriculum areas.
