An integrated, interdisciplinary thematic high school unit on the evolution and societal implications of the human genome project. With the recent announcement of the imminent completion of the mapping of the human genome, students will have to be prepared to address the implications of this development. An understanding of the workings of DNA is instrumental to the process of evaluating the project's implications. The history of this project, along with the information unearthed, and the technology developed have highlighted and created a number of current social and ethical considerations that will reach into many areas of daily living in the 21st century. In order to make informed decisions in the future the past and present must be understood.
