An Integrated Interdisciplinary Thematic Study of Charleston During the Civil War Era South Carolina is often perceived as a state slow to change and "backwards", yet on numerous occasions, it has pronounced itself a catalyst of rebellion, playing a large role in our nation's independence from England and being the first to secede from The Union. In fact, South Carolina provided the stage in Charleston for the first shots fired on Fort Sumter. The people of South Carolina have often shown an understanding of the commitment, dedication and heart it takes to promote change. In this unit, students explore the Civil War era through the unique and strategic city of Charleston, SC.
