Rising From The Ashes: From Tragedy to Triumph
An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Unit Examining the Power Of the Human Spirit to Triumph Over Adversity Teen years are often a painful time for adolescents, especially if their lives have been touched by tragedy (a romantic breakup, illness or death of a family member or friend), so an examination of literary (Romeo and Juliet) and actual (homelessness, child abuse) tragedy with consequent life and society-affirming improvements as a result of the tragedy may encourage students to develop a positive attitude as a natural response to disappointment or pain. Consideration of the plight of others may also inspire them with feelings of empathy for those less fortunate and lead them to develop a social conscience as well.
