Interdisciplinary Study: Varied Roles of the 20th Century American Women First ladies have had some traditional official responsibilities and roles, but in the last 60 years, the role of the first ladies has begun to change as some have chosen a cause or a role beyond the traditional and moved into the realm of political and social influence. At the same time, women in general have become influential in political and social realms though their chooices and have impacted our society in countless ways. This unit will look at first ladies and other women who have played roles in changing our political and social culture overthe past 60 years and draw students to evaluate the significance of such public women and other women in their personal lives.
