An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Unit on Pioneers What would cause people to leave everything that they have and everyone that they know and head into the unsettled American West? Through this unit, students will better understand the dangers, struggles and courage of the early settlers. They will also gain an understanding of the daily living of adults and children, the foods they ate and the past times that feed their souls. They will learn about the contributions of famous men such as Lewis & Clark, Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone. In the end the students will see that through modern conveniences have made our lives easier today, the true "pioneer spirit" of adventure continues to live on.
