The United States was created to form a more perfect Union-a new country based on freedom. Our country, though, has struggled greatly with the meaning of freedom throughout its history. Our students need to know that this struggle led to a civil war within our borders over the issues of personal, human and state freedoms. Emphasis will center on political, economic and social conditions that led to the Civil War.
