Westward Ho!
An Integrated, Interdisciplinary, Thematic Unit on Western Expansion in the United States. Westward Expansion during the 1800's and early 1900's moved the United States into the position of becoming the global powerhouse it is today. In conjunction with the movement west came the Industrial revolution and the understanding and application of electricity, building of railroads, the invention of the automobile, mechanized mining and agriculture, and airplanes. Analyzing this unit will increase the comprehension of American history and innovation while simultaneously introducing the visual and performing arts of this critical time period in the history of the United States.
As Americans gained control of the western region through the application of their "Manifest Destiny", the exploration of the Oregon Territories (Louisiana Purchase), Native American land treaties, and the resolution of the Mexican American War, the resources that were discovered drove the easterners westward toward the great unknown, and fueled the movement west to gain power, land and resources.
